Program Notes:

Among Shadows is short work for solo b-flat clarinet and musically is conflict with itself. The discordant themes interrupt one another in an attempt to make their own voices heard. These themes draw their musical language from segments of the octatonic scale as well as elements of more traditional harmony. This work also makes references to Igor Stravinsky’s music, creating ‘shadows’ that the player must navigate among the original compositional material. The goal is not harmony among the ideas but rather expression and acknowledgment. The player is free to develop their own interpretation of the work and perform the musical markings and indications as they see fit. Among Shadows was composed in 2018 and dedicated to those in mourning.
