Silent Sky - Excerpts

Silent Sky Chorale & Prelude - Link to Score

A chorale is a musical composition usually contains a simple, stately hymn tune that is harmonized in a homophonic texture. These chorales are often sung in 4 part harmony scored for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices. There are hundreds of different chorales among different religions & denominations, with some of these chorales original and some based upon existing folk songs. The Silent Sky Chorale is based upon “Margret’s Theme” which is integrated into the show.

A chorale prelude is a liturgical composition, typically written for organ, that highlights the chorale melody. These chorale preludes were thought to be used as a way to introduce the hymn to the congregation prior to singing the chorale together. These are typically polyphonic settings, with the chorale melody audible if ornamented and embellished. This setting takes the Silent Sky Chorale and expands and embellishes the melody overtop a contrapuntal bass line.
